Smuffle

background information

site: Smuffle
owner: Claire
reviewed: October 13th, 2008

first impression

The site, all together, does not look pleasing. The word plain comes to mind over and over.

NO NO NO!!!!!! i HAVE A COLD. Grrrrrrrrrr!!!! I hate people I hate people I hate people I hate people I hate people I hate people I hate people I hate people I hate people I hate people I hate people!

That would be an excerpt from her latest update. That isn't a very friendly greeting. Not to mention she needs a comma or a period between every "no" and "I hate people."

graphic

A repeating picture that has a filter and a frew splatter brushes on it. It's just plain. I don't understand what it's supposed to be a picture of, either.

Why are there suddenly birds over by the site name?

coding

A lot of corners have been cute. The background for everything is white, which gets boring extremely quickly and just isn't nice to look at.

Everything, text wise, is either blue or purple, both of which are colors that appear in the graphic, so good job on that.

Different fonts could have been used to make the CSS more complex and interesting, along with more colors, which would require a new graphic, and I'm pro new-graphic for this site.

content

Site content includes poetry, fiction, quotes, icons, portfolio, barbershop quartet, brushes, blends, screen caps, icon bases, layaouts, smilies, textures, stocks, reviews, and tutorials.

poetry;
I sincerely believe these should be on a "reads" page instead of the content page. I don't go to sites hoping to find poetry, I go for resources.

I will admit that it seems that Claire has passion and talent for poetry.

fiction;
I sincerely believe these should be on a "reads" page instead of the content page. I don't go to sites hoping to find fiction stories I go for resources.

I'm not reading these all the way through; they seem to be a lot of thinking instead of action.

quotes;
I sincerely believe these should be on a "reads" page instead of the content page. I don't go to sites hoping to find quotes, I go for resources.

Claire is fairly vague.

I began looking for nice quotes to put onto icons or layouts and i noticced sadly, I couldn't find any. So, I figured, might as well make my own quote page.

Does that mean that these are quotes she has made? Or that the page of quotes on her website belongs to her? (Every page on her website belongs to her.)

Not to mention that it should be So, I figured I might as well make my own quote page.

A better way to phrase the first sentence would be: While I was searching for good quotes to put on icons or in layouts I noticed I coudldn't find any.

icons;
Finally. Actual Content. Some of these are just cropped, some have filters, some have text, some look great and some look bad. Consistancy is nice...

portfolio;
I think this should be its own page in the navigation instead of a subpage in the content section. It's not really visitor content for a layout/graphic/resource site because visitors can't use any of this!

barbershop quartet;
I don't even know where this should go. Certainly not grouped with icons and her portfolio.

brushes;
Some of these are nice. The "the sky" brush set is previewed/offered twice though.

Only imagepacks are available.

blends;
Just because she's blended images doesn't make them nice. She should have added brushes, text, textures...

screen caps;
No one has to credit her for these screencaps of movies. She doesn't own the movies or their copyrights.

icon bases;
Cropped pictures! People can do this by themselves!

layouts;
Why are these under resources?

Why is the first one offered twice? The only difference is a black and white picture versus a color picutre. Just choose one!

These aren't very impressive at all. The best one is the Avril Lavigne layout.

smilies;
These are genuinely cute and seem to be well made!

textures;
It's silly to offer large and icon textures. People can just use the large ones on their icons...

The few textures available are nice and I would refer people here.

stocks;
These are high quality images, for sure, but I don't know if it's realistic that they would be used.

reviews;
I don't feel as if Claire has enough knowledge to review another site.

tutorials;
Her tutorials are easy to understand and follow along with, especially because of all the images shown along the way.

navigation

Navigating this site is easy for the most part. I think that the poetry, fiction, and quotes should be taken off of the content page and given their own page; same goes for reviews and her portfolio.

Subpages include blog, site, clairessa (I think? The font is hard to read.), content, and tagboard.

Credits can be found off of the site page.

overall

Claire has potential and if she works hard I think she could get her site up to par.

In some of the content I can see that she has the ability to make nice content, but there's a lot of poor quality content that's available, too.

Her stocks are the highlight of her site. Her smilies are very well made, too. I would suggest... Switching the site over to php for your convenience. It's just a lot easier.

The iframe is funky on some pages along the bottom and scrolls from right to left. Fix that!

Poetry, fiction, and quotes should be moved to a different page other than "content." Perhaps "reads" would be appropriate.

Offering downloads of the brush sets.

Nixing the screen caps page or AT LEAST take down the "please credit" due to the fact that she doesn't own the movies or their copyrights.

The review format, sign up, and queu should be its own page, not off of the content page.

More interesting, high quality graphics that people can understand and possibly relate to.

More complex coding.

Changing the imagemap so that when you hover your mouse over it "image map" doesn't pop up. How silly.

This cbox is for visitors to comment about the sites that have been reviewed. It is not for visitors' complaints, defending of friends, telling me how to review sites, or for juding my site. If you want to do one of those listed above, feel free to e-mail me at skylineillusions@yahoo.com which is the site e-mail that I check frequently; I don't feel as if there is a need for any one to e-mail me over these reviews, though. I check this cbox about once every two weeks, usually only if one of my friends says "Go look at that cbox!"
