brilliant mistakes

background information

site: Brilliant Mistakes
owner: Nnie
reviewed: September 20th, 2008

first impression

The graphic is really simple with a default "texture."

The code doesn't look too interesting, but it's not deathly boring.

graphic

The site name can be easily seen and read. The image map links are a little hard to read though. The texture used is just a default filter. The black outline around the original image looks really bad.

A complete lack of colors besides black and white is already setting her up for a boring code. There are ways to make interesting coding with only black and white, but it doesn't look like Nnie has done so here.

coding

Bland. Black, white, and grey. The most intersting part is the sidebar.

At least the main divider and the sidebar have different headers and text.

content

Content includes a lot of HTML help, friendster layouts, patterns, affiliate images, glitter fills, mini blends, icons, uncoded layouts, button bases, icon textures, desktop wallpaper, free programs, fonts, and brushes.

HTML help;
There are a lot of these and I'm not going to go through and comment. I glanced around though... previews and examples are really a must!

friendster layouts;
"Oops! We can't find that page."

patterns;
Some of these are nice, check 'em out.

affiliate images;
People can make their own.

glitter fills;
What are these used for?

mini blends;
these blends 100% made by ME. please credit when you use them :) and please don't claim them as your own, it's the same with you against the law! Should be: These blends were all made 100% by me. Pleaes credit if you use them, and please don't claim them as your own.

I don't even understand where she was going with the law part. Read it a few times and get confused.

These are nicely blended, but some are really boring. She should download some more brushes.

icons;
While some of these are just cropped pictures, some are actually edited and look nice.

uncoded layouts;
These are really poorly made and look like pictures and random brushes have been spontaneously slapped together.

button bases;
People should make their own.

icon textures;
These are just cropped portions of stock images and textures, but I guess lazy people could find them helpful.

desktop wallpaper;
Should be plural.

These aren't that great, and they only come in one size.

free programs;
It annoys me when people do this. These aren't Nnie's, she's just linking people to other sites. "Some of them is the free trial," should be: Some downloads are only free trials. She should at least label which one is a trial.

fonts;
Did she make these?

brushes;
I like the dashed line brushes. The "lines" brush set isn't spectacular.

navigation

The site is easy to navigate. Subpages include home, html, art, downloads, tuts, and site.

Credits don't deserve their own page, apparently. They're just put on along the bottom of the site page. Only six resources?

It's peculiar that on the art page, in the sidebar, it says "Your tagboard code here. Cbox recommended." why would Nnie put that in on her own layout if she was just going to use it? Did someone else make this layout?

Clarification: Nnie has e-mailed me post this review and has cleared up the cbox/tagboard nonsense. Originally she wanted to post the layout code for a blog skin resource (and was being nice to visitors and saying where to put a tagboard/cbox.). Then she thought she could use it for her site, did a little editing, and used it for her site but forgot to take out that code on some pages.

In the sidebar, on some pages she's eleven and on some she's twelve.

overall

More enthusiasm! More creativity!

Deleting the less useful content would be a good idea in order to focus on the more useful content.

Fix that page not exisiting nonsense. She doesn't go around and check pages? Who knows how long that page has been down.

She should double check her credits... only six looks a little shady for all of the content she has.

comments

note: the cbox below is the same one on all review pages.

if you leave a comment... then refer to the name of the site. This review was for Brilliant Mistakes

This cbox is for visitors to comment about the sites that have been reviewed. It is not for visitors' complaints, defending of friends, telling me how to review sites, or for juding my site. If you want to do one of those listed above, feel free to e-mail me at skylineillusions@yahoo.com which is the site e-mail that I check frequently; I don't feel as if there is a need for any one to e-mail me over these reviews, though. I check this cbox about once every two weeks, usually only if one of my friends says "Go look at that cbox!"
